Whether you’re decluttering or moving, it can be difficult to know exactly how to dispose of unwanted furniture items. There are a complicated set of do’s and don’ts when it comes to the recycling and disposal of such items, as well as where you can do so legally and safely – without causing environmental damage.

How can I get rid of furniture for free?

Council recycling centre

More commonly known as the tip, these council operated recycling centres are designed to be a place where you can dispose safely of your furniture and other such items. The majority of local recycling centres allow for a range of furniture items to be disposed of, including general household waste as well as larger pieces such as sofas, beds, carpets and tables/chairs. Some will also allow electrical items such as televisions, freezers and fridges, but it is best to check with your specific local centre to confirm.

Most centres in the United Kingdom will ask you to provide proof of local residency before you are granted access, so it’s important you use your closest recycling centre.

Council waste collection

For those unable to reach the recycling centres, local councils may offer a waste collection service for a small fee of approximately £20-£25. However, due to a high demand for this service, the advanced booking system means you may have to wait up to 2 months before they can reach you. This is not ideal for many people who are looking to offload their furniture quickly.

Charity donations

There are also some independent recycling projects that work for a particular charity. For example, the British Heart Foundation accept useable furniture and electrical items that can then be sold on with the profits going to the charity.

What type of furniture items can I not recycle?

Although most furniture items can be disposed of or recycled safely, this is not the case for some. You should check with your local council or recycling company for their accurate list of forbidden items. For example, while doors are widely accepted, those containing glass panels are not. A range of cookers are also suitable, but Agas, Rayburns and cast-iron and often not accepted. Other items that are not suitable include: bagged waste, batteries, branches, bricks, car parts and scrap metal, clothes pole, pianos, radiators, roofing, sheds, and fireplaces.

Other items may need to be ordered specifically so that they are able to be sorted safely. Freezers and fridges should be taped up and with the door facing a wall so that it does not open accidentally and cause harm. Mattresses, sofas and other similar furniture items should be covered to protect from the weather elements.
